V's Daily Diary || my plan for 2018

A few weeks ago, I found this amazing planner when I was at my local art store in Beijing. It's so cool.

The neon cover and the black edged pages were the clincher.

The cover is soft and pliable and I really like how the days are set up.

Every few pages there are quotes. I love the priorities box, the am/pm boxes etc. It makes me want to use it as an actual planner. Almost. Cause I have plans to continue doing "my day arted": the daily art project that Jules inspired a few of us to try.

I ended up really liking my 2017 diary even though I found it challenging at first. It worked when I gave myself permission not to work on it each day. I was putting pressure on myself and feeling like I was "behind" or "late" if I wasn't documenting each day on the day. I want to keep at it for next year but with a twist.

For 2017, it was anything goes: washi tape, scraps, drawings, paint, etc. You can see all my posts here. For next year, I'd like to focus more on drawing. Riet once discussed how she used the cast-offs from the magazine photos she uses in her art journaling. I use a lot of those in the zines I make with the Zine Squad. But Riet is right in that these pieces of paper are really still quite interesting.

So my challenge will be for me to use one paper scrap from my stash and to draw something each day. I may continue the image on the scrap or just draw on top of it. I really like the idea of using random scraps that are either from my day or cast off from my other projects. My goal is to improve my drawing skills and to use those papers.

The big thing is what pen to use to draw. I did a pen test page as there is always the issue of the pen bleeding through the paper.

I feel like the Sharpie pen is probably my best bet. It's also the one I used in my diary for 2017.

 I'm very happy to have found a slightly more curated approach for the coming year. What about you? Will you be doing a daily art project? If so, what is it and if not, why not?

Let me know in the comments!

Color Blast || my Grey Matter

Well here it is: my last post about the Color Blast project. Here is a flip through of my Grey journal. I love it so much. Everyone gave it a feminist/women/anatomical/magical feel and those are some of my very favorite subjects so I am just so happy with this journal.

Doing a long-winded collab like this is wonderful and especially when it is complete. We were lucky that no journal got lost or destroyed in transit! 2017 was definitely a year of collabs for me. I am looking forward to slowing down on that front in 2018.

Please take a look at eveyone's completed journals by clicking their names: Riet, Lauren, Julia, Moriah, Lauren and Sarah. Thank you all for making Grey Matter so special!

Get Messy season of Nature || 01

A brand new Season is upon us! The Season of Nature starts now. I was feeling a bit ambiguous about it at first but I think that I will get my groove soon enough.

My first page is an introduction of sorts. It's the first page of my journal. I went with the Queen of Nature prompt.

One of the background papers (on the top) is the result of my tutorial for making the Witch's Brew. This lovely hue of purple blue comes from the red cabbage ink I made.

Purple isn't a color I usually use, but it has a nice magical feel to it. And how cool is it that a shade of purpleis Pantone's color of the year for 2018!?

My second spread is in response to Jules's be the element prompt. I really liked being fire here.

I started with fluid acrylics and then I burned the bottom of the pages.

Jaimee sent along some information on alchemists and different types of fire and I was really interested in the notion of Secret Fire. One that is ecternal to us, surrounds us and ever present.

I definitely want to harness some of its power these days.

The gold fluid acrylic is so inviting! I really enjoyed using this medium and will try to play more with the ones I have.

Here's a look at Missandei checking out my burning pages!

V's Daily Diary || November

Wow, I never thought I would get to November with this project. It feels so close to done! Even with travelling, guests and deadlines, I've stuck through it. It's already really cool to look back on. Here's a look at November 2017:

One thing that changed for me is that I don't stress anymore if I'm not up to date. I did this month in two sessions and that is ok. I used to fret about not remembering what happened that day but then I realised I have Instagram to job my memory. Also it's not a big deal if you don't recall the exact date when something happened.

It's so chunky now. One month to go and that's it!!!

30 Days of Lists || December 2017

Itès that time of year again! December and all its documentable glory! It's also the time of year when we feel overwhelmed because there is a lot to do, lots of family to see, lots of food to prepare and eat and lots to put in albums. It's easy to get lost and sidetracked with all the options out there.

So this is where December's edition of 30 Days of Lists saves: lists are quick and easy, my notebooks house all the pretty Christmas ephemera I have in my stash and they make a great placeholder for those December feelings. Intrigued? Click here to find out more or use the 30 Lists button on the right sidebar.

So how will I list this year? I decided to try a new size for me: Traveller's Notebook size. I used a similar format for one of my travel journals and really liked it so I thought I'd give it a try this year.

Here's a look at the inside pages:

I used some papers from different collections I had on hand. I went with a mixed colour palette with some traditional colours and some unorthodox ones too! I love the result and I'm excited to start filling it in!

I'm curious as to what your approach to December documenting is. Please let me know your tips for keeping it simple in the comments.

Do you think you would ever try listing as a way of documenting December?

Color Blast || Yellow Fever

We have come to the last Color Blast journal before we share our very own completed journals. My Participation in Color Blast ended with Riet's gorgeous Yellow Journal.

I am not a yellow kind of girl so I was unsure about my approach to this journal. But once I had it in my hands, everything came together.

As I did with th other color journals, I added some French expressions. Rire jaune means to laugh ironically. So I tried to pair this sentiment with a happy image to change the narrative.

This was one of my favourite pages to participate in!

Since I was the last person to have this journal, I was able to add to some of the other spreads, like the buikdings in these pages.

I added the figure and the message to these backgrounds.

 I had the yellow journal in August and that was also when I had just finished my Lemondade journal, so the page on the left appeared.

This is my absolute favourite spread.

Another page with some add-ons by me.

Go check out everyone else's pages! We are so close to finishing!

Riet, Lauren, Moriah, Jules, Lauren and Sarah.

See you next time :)
